Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh leader Tarikul Islam , also known as Tarek and Mithu, has reportedly confessed to killing self-styled saint Lutfor Rahman Faruk and five others in Dhaka’s Gopibagh two years ago.
Mithu gave a statement before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman admitting the crime on Friday, investigator Detective Branch Inspector Kazi Golam Kabir told reporters.
The magistrate ordered him into jail after recording the statement.
Lutfor Rahman, his son Sarowar Islam Faruk alias Monir, and four others were found slaughtered at their Gopibagh house on Dec 21, 2013.
Police’s prosecution wing Assistant Commissioner Mirash Uddin told bdnews24.com Mithu said in the statement JMB members carried out the murder of the six.
He earlier ostensibly gave another confessional statement on Oct 25 in the case over the murder of former PDB chief Khizir Khan in his house at Badda on Oct 5.
There was a ‘Khankah Sharif’ (a place for religious gathering) at Khan’s home and many followed him as a ‘pir’ (saint).
Mithu was arrested in Tangail on Oct 14.
He has also been shown arrested in the case over the murder of Islami Front leader Nurul Islam Farooqi.
He had been arrested after the simultaneous series bombings across Bangladesh in 2005 but was freed on bail two years ago.
